1st Lady Shirley B. Churn

 

Mrs. Shirley J. Brown Churn, First Lady of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Winston-Sa1em, North Caro1ina, is a native of Washington, DC. She was reared by Christian parents who led her to an early acceptance of Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She is an honor graduate of Shaw University with a B.S. degree in Business Management and received her Master of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies from Wake Forest University in May 1995. 10640255401171CDPThe professional career of Mrs. Churn started at the age of 18 when she became employed by the Federal Government as a Clerk Typist, Stenographer, and later a Secretary at the Navy Department in Washington, DC. She served as Secretary to the President’s Council for Equal Employment opportunity during the Kennedy Administration, under the Chairmanship of Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. This was a position she is most proud of. Before moving to New York with her husband, Mrs. Churn was Executive Secretary to the Deputy Director, Bureau for Europe and Africa at the State Department. While in New York (after staying home 12 years with her two sons) Mrs. Churn became Secretary/Bookkeeper to the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner at the Building Department, City Hall, in Mount Vernon, NY. While working for the Commissioner, Ernest Davis, he became County Legislator and from 1997-2006, this B1ack man, served as the Mayor of Mount Vernon, New York. In Winston-Salem she continued her professional life by being a Substitute Teacher at the Career Center. Additionally, she served as Secretary to the Executive Director at Winston-Lake YMCA, Office Manager for Ketchum Marketing Firm at Winston-Salem State University for its 25 Million Dollar Centennial Campaign, and she taught Business Courses for 3 years at Miller-Motte Business College and later served as an Adjunct Professor at Winston-Salem State University. Mrs. Churn has received awards and proclamations from the office of the County Executive, Westchester County, NY, and a proclamation from the Office of the Mayor, Yonkers, NY as well as from the Congress of the United States House of Representative for the outstanding work she did with young people in Yonkers, NY. The Lord is first in Mrs. Churn’s life and she shows this with her love for His church and His people. She has been guest speaker for Women’s Day Programs, Social C1ubs, Schools, and youth gatherings. She has been active in each church where her husband has served. In Union Baptist Church in Easton, MD she organized the Chancel Choir, at Messiah Baptist Church in Yonkers, NY she founded and organized the Scholarship Fund Committee, the Choral Speaking Group, the Debutantes and Royal Ambassadors, the Ship of Faith, the Cathedral of Faith Choir and the Angelic Choir. And now at Mount Zion she continues her interest in youth involvement as the organizer and supervisor of the Youth Ensemble. Mrs. Shirley Churn is the proud wife of Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr., the proud mother of two sons, Rev. Serenus T. Churn, Jr. and the Rev. Starling T. Churn. She is still working with youth and is now pursuing her own business, Watkins by Shirley.
